Death and Social Security
When a person passes away, the mortuary usually reports the death to Social Security (SSA).
It’s best to confirm with the mortuary that is their procedure.
If not, then you need to call SSA at (800) 772-1213.
Once a death is reported SSA will stop benefits immediately.
A person must be alive for the entire month to be eligible for benefits.
Benefits are paid in arrears.
Your SSA payment in April, for example, is for the month of March.
If a person dies September 28 and receives a SSA deposit in October, the person did not live for the entire month of September so the deposit will be reversed by SSA.
If it is not, then Form SSA-1724 needs to be filed and the amount returned to SSA.
