Hospice Fraud in California
Hospice care is a wonderful Medicare benefit that provides comfort and support for people nearing the end of life, completely covered.
But crooks in California, especially in Los Angeles, have turned it into a massive scam.
Fraudsters sign seniors up for fake hospice companies, sometimes without their knowledge, then bill Medicare for services never provided.
Los Angeles County alone now has nearly 1,923 hospice providers, more than 36 states combined. That has nothing to do with LA having more sick people. It's pure fraud.
Here's the scary part. Once you're enrolled in a fraudulent hospice, your Medicare number gets tied up with that fake company.
That means when you actually need real medical care, your doctor may not be able to bill Medicare on your behalf.
California has revoked over 280 hospice licenses and arrested 284 people, but hundreds of shady providers are still out there.
If anyone ever approaches you or a family member offering cash or free gifts to sign up for hospice care, that is a scam. Walk away. You can also check your Medicare statements to make sure no hospice charges appear that you didn't approve.
