Is Your Beneficiary Form Up-to-Date?
The beneficiary form of an IRA or retirement plan is one of the most important forms for an account owner.
Adult children should check with their parent to make sure the form is up-to-date.
Nothing can be more frustrating, time consuming, expensive and cause family conflicts than an improperly completed form.
This is especially true if the parents are divorced or one parent has already passed.
Copies of the beneficiary form should be obtained from the plan or IRA custodian and kept on file for easy reference.
IRA or retirement plan post-death distribution is determined by the beneficiary form not your will or living trust.
