According to Assemblyman Carl DeMaio (R-San Diego) in a March 16, 2025 interview with Breitbart News Sunday, Medi-Cal is totally insolvent and in fiscal collapse since Gov. Newsom (D) opened the program up to illegal migrants less than a year ago. 

As we wrote about last week, the state’s Department of Finance is lending the maximum amount allowable by law of $3.44 billion to Medi-Cal. 

According to DeMaio, Medi-Cal doesn’t have the funds to pay vendors or healthcare providers.

A March 19, 2025 LA Times article says that Gov Newsom is asking the state Legislature for an additional $2.8 billion for Medi-Cal in addition to the $3.44 billion loan. 

My belief is eliminating the countable asset threshold for qualification also weighed in heavily on this financial mess.
