Social Security Fairness Act
The Social Security Fairness Act was signed into law by President Biden on January 5, 2025.
It repeals the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP).
It will increase Social Security benefits for certain types of workers including some (not all): teachers, firefighters and police officers, federal employees covered by the Civil Service Retirement System and those whose work had been covered by a foreign security system.
It is projected that over 3 million people will be affected.
Because the changes are complex, much of the work will have to be done manually.
SSA doesn’t have an estimated completion date when benefits would be paid.
